Home Beaches Oral History Oral History: the Battey bracelet

Battey_bracelet_2This short entry is a precursor to a future collection of oral histories (both about the beach and other aspects of the Weekapaug community) involving residents.  One of the most enduring (multi-generational) traditions is the construction of "Battey" bracelets at summer's end for young teenagers (and others) in Weekapaug.  Missy Langley Owen is (and has been for a number of years) carrying on the tradition of constructing these woven, all cotton bracelets (using an increasing hard find cotton yarn).   The number of bracelets constructed span well into the thousands and cover a number of decades (a tradition started by her earlier family members).  The library attached to the WFD contains a detailed description of this tradition and also the signature book.  This book is especially appealing as children can look-up their parents signatures as to when they got a bracelet as part of their enduring summer experience.  It  is anticipated that next year's website will contain a short video of a bracelet in the process of construction, until then the attached gives some idea of the finished product and the smiles it produces.
