Home Environment Focus on Quonnie

Quonochontaug is Rhode Island’s most pristine pond.  However, pollution from nitrogen-based lawn fertilizers, outdated, under-pumped septic systems and high phosphate household cleaning products threatens its existence. These pollutants are carried by groundwater into Quonnie Pond where they upset the natural balance of marine plant and animal life by stimulating the growth of algae.  Excess algae depletes oxygen from the water, threatening marine creatures which cannot live under no/low oxygen conditions. In addition, algae blooms decrease the light necessary for eelgrass, an essential marine habitat, to survive.  Quonnie’s first pond already has dead zones.
