Helping to preserve our unique natural environment

Weekapaug Green is a group of residents who share a concern about preserving our community's natural environment. Since 2007 WG has coordinated volunteer activities that raise awareness of simple ways to protect and steward Weekapaug's unique environment. WG offers information to help residents better understand how to protect our ponds from the threat of pollution and how to reduce our use of energy from non-renewable sources.

WG believes that making simple changes in our daily habits will assure the long-term health of our coastal community and preserve it for future generations.

Dear Friends of Weekapaug Green,

Summer in Weekapaug is around the corner and the Weekapaug Green stewards have environmentally thoughtful events for your participation.

The Weekapaug Farmers' Market will return to the lawn of the Weekapaug Fire District office and it's not too late to volunteer to help on Friday mornings. Most of our vendors are returning, and you will be able to buy everything you need to feed you and your family for a week, as well as beautiful plants to enhance your porch.

Zero Emission Days will be on Friday, July 19th and August 16th, where alternative energy displays and local environmental groups will be represented. We hope to encourage you to think about your energy use and changes you can make to help mitigate climate change.

This summer we are sponsoring our first community read book, The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan. This book explores how different methods of raising crops and livestock impacts us and the land. Pick up a copy at the library or at your local bookstore and start reading. We will have book discussions on two Tuesday nights, July 23rd and August 20th where we will serve wine and refreshments.

Wednesday, July 17 and Saturday, August 10th are Lights Out Night and Star Gazing with Jim Buffum and Mark Bullinger. Turn off your lights, park at the yacht club, and walk to the Weekapaug Inn's shuffleboard courts to learn to identify constellations and to witness the August Perseid Showers.

On July 28th at 11:30 am, children will gather at the chapel for the Weekapaug Green Kids Parade. The parade culminates at the ballfield where the Weekapaug Foundation for Conservation will provide refreshments. The bike/stroller swap will be set up there. This is a good time to empty your garages and perhaps trade a too small bike for a larger one. We are grateful to Molly Zola and Deb Kemper for organizing these events.

We are also excited that Caroline Petersen and Helene Miller Kase are again leading Weekapaug Loves Art the first three Friday mornings of August from 9:30 - 11:30 am. In past years they have used recycled materials to create works of art and last year they supervised the large canvas of a seascape that was on display at the WYC on the August awards night.

Finally on August 6th we are screening A Fierce Green Fire, a film that chronicles the environmental movement from Rachel Carson to the present. We are fortunate to have Dave Prescott of Save the Bay (based in Westerly) to give us an introduction and to take questions at the end.

All of our events will be on the WFD calendar as well as on our brochure!
